| | Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, is a cosmopolitan city with over 2 million inhabitants and a booming commercial centre for the region's huge oil and agro-business. As a result of major international invesments in plantation, agriculture from 1870's onward. Medan grew from a tiny village to a presperous colonial city of 60,000 people by 1943.
Following independence in 1945, the population exploded even more rapidly, with dramatic influx of various Batak and other groups all over Sumatra and Indonesia. Today, Medan is by far the largest city in Sumatra and the third largest in the nation after Jakarta and Surabaya in the island of Java.As a bustling, modern commercial and administrative centre, Medan is Indonesia's western most international gateway, maintaining regular flights from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Langkawi, Singapore. Additionally, there are several
flight connecting Medan to the nation's capital, Jakarta, to Padang and to other destinations in the western Indonesia island. Medan literally means "Field" or "Battlefield", and indeed was once the battlefield where the Deli Sultanate and the Kingdom of Aceh were at the war hundred of years ago. Downtown Medan, which centred on Jalan Sutomo, is known as the city's Chinatown, as it is mostly inhabited by Chinese community. It is the heart of North Sumatra's wholesale trade industry, with shops selling everything from heavy machinery
to toiletries. Several parts of this area have been named Kowloon, Hongkong, Hokkian and Canton, where bird's nests and shark fins are easily found. Exploring the most culturally diverse selected historical destination, such as : Istanan Maimun, the ceremonial palace of Sultan Deli; Mesjid Raya or Grand Mosque; Kampung Keling, with Sri Mariamman Temple, built in 1884 (has been renovated few years ago) ; Vihara Gunung Timur, the largest Chinese Temple in Medan (perhaps in Sumatra); Immanuel Protestant Church, built in 1912; Kesawan
Street, a centre of traditional handicraft, developed by Tjong A Fie (first wealthy chineseman in Medan); The Government Provincial Museum; The Military Museum, displays Sumatra battles of Indonesian revolution era; Asam Kumbang Crocodille Farm; and many more interesting destination to visit. |
